World Water Day
On March 22, we celebrate World Water Day, an event that invites us to reflect on the crucial importance of water—a vital but increasingly threatened resource.
Why is this day important?
Water, the source of life, is essential for our well-being, health, and environment. Yet, according to the United Nations, 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water, while climate change, pollution, and waste accelerate the water crisis in many regions across the globe. As a company, we have a role to play in protecting this precious resource.
For Nexira, water is an essential resource in the production of our products. The Serqueux site, the world’s largest acacia production facility, where acacia gum is produced, is our largest consumer of water.
This is why we have decided to integrate water consumption reduction into the implementation of our Energy Management System under ISO 50001 standards, combining energy and water management.
At the end of 2024, Nexira initiated the implementation of an Energy Management System (EnMS) at its Serqueux site in line with the ISO 50001 standard, with the goal of obtaining certification in 2025.
This initiative aims to optimize energy management, reduce consumption, and improve the efficiency of processes and equipment. By lowering energy consumption, the project also supports Nexira’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint (Scope 1 and 2).
To drive this initiative, three energy coordinators—Vincent Butet (Group Industrial Director), Christophe Coureau (Health, Safety & Environment Coordinator), and Rémi Picard (Process Manager)—have completed the PROREFEI training program, supported by ADEME, to gain in-depth expertise in industrial energy efficiency. Nexira is also working with Marc Peignien (MP Énergie), an expert in energy management and performance.
A key step towards a more sustainable industry!

To achieve this goal, a multi-service “Water” working group was established in 2024. This group meets regularly and is responsible for:
- Monitoring detailed daily consumption to detect and promptly correct anomalies
- Defining and tracking medium- and long-term action plans to reduce consumption
- Implementing awareness-raising initiatives
Nexira has set a target to reduce its water consumption by 10% over the years 2025-2026.
Among the improvements made in 2024, we have worked on:
- Optimizing the reverse osmosis system for water treatment and recycling in our processes
- Reducing cooling water usage for our high-pressure pumps
- Optimizing CIP (Cleaning-In-Place), an automatic cleaning process for treatment and production facilities
A major project for 2025 is the replacement of our TAR system, which cools part of our manufacturing process water, with a more water-efficient adiabatic cooling system. This upgrade is expected to save approximately 7,500 m³ of water annually. Recognized as a key contribution to water conservation, this project is financially supported by the AESN (Seine-Normandy Water Agency) at 40%.
