Shaping the conversation

From the menopause and hormonal balance to skin, stress and sleep, women’s health issues are more diverse and nuanced than ever before. No longer willing to be categorised by gender alone, this increasingly influential audience is taking control and seeking out dietary supplements that support their evolving health and wellness needs.

Not surprisingly, this demand is driving new opportunities and the global market for women’s health and beauty supplements¹ is forecast to grow from $54.5 billion in 2022 to an impressive $89.3 billion by 2032, representing a healthy compound annual growth of 5.2%.

It’s also shaping exciting product innovations that respond to the complex needs of women at different stages of life. According to a global report from Innova Market Insights² 24% of recent women’s speciality supplement launches targeted support for the menstrual cycle, while 22% focused on the menopause.

What’s equally important, however, is that these developments also recognize that female consumers are now looking for customized solutions that speak to their individual areas of concern, which may be physical, emotional or a combination of the two. For women in the 40-50+ age bracket this diversity is particularly evident, with insights³ listing gut health, joint health, heart health, along with stress management and skin support among the many trending targets.

This welcome shift can largely be attributed to women finding and using their collective voice. With the help of social media, this openness has highlighted health concerns that were once overlooked or kept in the shadows. At the same time, it presents a valuable opportunity for the nutraceutical industry to develop personalized, innovative solutions based on these important revelations.

The good news is that change is already underway.

Naturally-inspired ingredients

For brand owners keen to capitalize and develop dietary supplements that support women’s health and wellbeing, Nexira’s Women‘s Health Collection offers a compelling solution. This extensive range of natural ingredients has been shaped to reflect the fact that every woman is different and goes through many complex changes during life.

Within menstrual support, for instance, we offer natural ingredients that help with digestive issues, mood and emotions, as well as urinary discomfort, while our approach to healthy ageing encompasses weight management, vitality, and sports and mobility. Plus, whether sourced from cranberry, lemon balm, sage or any of the many carefully selected natural raw materials, all our ingredients can be used to promote positive messaging that connects with women’s preference for natural4, sustainably-sourced and clean-label5 ingredients.

We also recognize the importance of supporting our ingredient solutions with science. Women want to know that the products they buy will deliver the promised benefits – particularly in an age of rising costs – so providing this reassurance is essential, which is why we continue to invest in ongoing research designed to further our understanding and bring new innovations to the market.

Skin health, for instance, is a universal concern for women of all ages and life stages. According to FMCG Gurus 2022, dry skin, wrinkles and blotches are among the top skin priorities globally, with 60% of consumers reportedly seeking out ingestible products that can improve their skin health. Yet, while they are certainly increasingly seeking out targeted nutricosmetics, this well-informed audience also expects products to deliver the promised beauty-from-within benefits.

Science-backed skincare

With this in mind, we are delighted to report the exciting findings of our most recent clinical study into the skincare benefits of Oli-Ola™ – our proprietary, 100% natural olive extract produced from organic agriculture in the Southern Mediterranean. Part of Nexira’ NutriBeauty, Oli-Ola™ has already been shown to actively benefit the skin through our innovative IN-TEST-PASS study.

The placebo controlled, double-blind, randomized crossover trial involved 132 healthy women aged between 40-60 years, living in an urban environment, and following a similar lifestyle in terms of sleep, tobacco use, diet and so on. Their skin phototypes were classified according to the Fitzpatrick scale and ranged from Type II (white skin, burns easily, tans with difficulty) to Type IV (beige or olive skin, burns minimally, tans moderately or easily). Different skin parameters were analyzed, such as biomechanical properties, complexion radiance and skin condition and overall user satisfaction.

The results of dietary supplementation with Oli-Ola™ were overwhelmingly positive, confirming our initial findings, with strong benefits recorded against key beauty parameters such as:

  • Skin elasticity improved by 13% (cutometery measurement)
  • 87% reported overall product satisfaction.

The full details of this research project will be presented at this year’s SupplySide West in Las Vegas, where we will also exclusively share important findings from a recently-completed study for Carolean™  – our unique synergistic complex of carob and nopal for appetite control that has shown a clear ability to significantly slow down gastric emptying measured both acute and chronically along with a significant reduction of food intake (up to 47% of decrease after 3 weeks). We hope to see you there.
