Resembling clover, desmodium is a wild and perennial plant, with multiple leaves, native to West Africa. It is also widespread in Latin America (Brazil, Peru, Amazon region) and in all humid equatorial zones. Creeping or climbing, this plant is supported on the trunks of cocoa or oil palm trees. Measuring about 50 cm, Desmodium has hairy and trifoliate leaves, small mauve flowers and fruits in the form of pods.
Desmodium has only recently become known in Europe. Indeed, it was introduced in France in the 1970’s by Dr. Pierre Tubéry and his wife, leading to the start of numerous scientific research projects on its compounds and properties. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial herb native from southern Europe and the Mediterranean region where it is traditionally consumed as an herbal tea, or in an extract form for its relaxing properties.
The leaves have a gentle lemon scent, related to mint. Its flavor comes from the citronellal, citronellol, citral, and geraniol terpenes.

Lemon (Citrus limon), native to India and South Asia, is a small evergreen tree related to the orange, pomelo, tangerine and grapefruit. The ellipsoidal fruit has a green rind when unripe, which turns yellow when ripe, and the pulp is segmented and light yellow in color. Lemon juice is used in a wide variety of beverages and foods.
Famous for their sour taste as a result of their high citric acid content, lemons are also an excellent source of naturally occurring vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, and contain the plant compound, citrus limonin. Rosehip (Rosa canina) is the freshy, ripened scarlet ovary, or seeded fruit, of the rose plant. It forms at the base of the rose petals and is picked in autumn when all of the petals have fallen off. While many rose varieties are grown for their beauty and fragrance, the Rosa canina is cultivated for its hips, which are a valuable source of vitamin C.

Turmeric (or Curcumin) is a plant coming from Asia, which is particularly cultivated in India and China.
It is a common spice that comes from the root of Curcuma longa, traditionally used as a spicy ingredient for cooking in India.
The main coloring agents belong to the curcuminoids family. Major compounds identified by chromatography are: curcumine, dimethoxy-curcumine and bis dimethoxy-curcumine.

Native to North America, witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana L.) is found as a tall shrub or small tree (up to 7,5m high) from the Hamamelidaceae family.
One theory about the common name witch hazel is that “witch” may be a derivative of the old English wych meaning “to bend” in reference to trees with pliant branches, while “hazel” may be due to the resemblance of the leaves to those of true hazels in the genus Corylus (Betulaceae).
Witch hazel has been traditionally used in water form (Hamamelis water) for its ability to soothe sensitive skin. Leaf, bark and water have been reported to have astringent properties. These properties can be attributed to the tannins content.
Nexira’s witch hazel leaves are rigorously selected from organic French raw material and then follow a water extraction process to obtain a fine brown powder.
