Low Carbon Strategy
“As the world leader in acacia gum, we have a corporate responsibility. We must look to the future and carry strong values, which have meaning and which correspond to us. Global warming is a significant and immediate challenge. With inavea™ caring by nature project, Nexira is committed to contribute to collective carbon neutrality, which is certainly an ambitious project from an environmental point of view, but also an economic one! It embodies all the actions we have been carrying out for a long time.”
Mathieu Dondain, CEO, Nexira
Low Carbon Strategy
As part of our environmental approach, we have been measuring greenhouse gas emissions from our head office, foreign offices and all our manufacturing sites since 2009.
In 2019, Nexira has initiated a new approach with a low carbon strategy at the company level. From harvesting the raw material to its delivery, Nexira has measured and reduced its greenhouse gas emissions. This 100% voluntary approach is part of a sustainable development approach initiated in the 1970s.
The several implemented actions allow a 9% reduction of our carbon footprint per ton of finished product between 2019 and 2022. This reduction represents about 5,500 tons of CO2, equivalent to 625 world tours by car.
Measure and Identification of the Main Carbon Emissions
We measured our CO2 emissions activity from our sourcing fields to our customers’ delivery according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, an internationally recognized methodology. At this stage, everything was evaluated, from energy to fixed assets. To achieve this part, Nexira was supported by OuiAct, a leading company in environmental and carbon strategies.
The carbon footprint allowed us to identify the three main sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
It appears that input emissions constitute 36% of the global carbon footprint. However, acacia gum comes from natural forests and the harvest is hand-picked, without the use of agricultural techniques that generate emissions. Acacia gum has a lower carbon footprint compared to other cultivated raw materials.
The Energy item was predominant, followed by Freight, with 34% and 26% of GHG emissions, respectively*.
*Nexira has changed its calculation method for its carbon footprint in 2022. As Nexira wanted to compare 2019 and 2022, the company has updated the 2019 carbon footprint. These percentages are the result of the new calculation and differ from the previous communication.
Reduction of Carbon Emissions
After the carbon footprint, we have implemented priority actions aimed at controlling these emissions at all levels of the company.
Built in 2020, our carbon emission reduction plan was supported by a Science-Based Target methodology to align Nexira’s emissions targets and deadlines. These reduction targets are consistent with science and the global goal of keeping the temperature well below 2°C (WB2D).
Concrete actions from our reduction plan and results:
- For direct emissions: Invest significantly in less emitting technologies
Nexira has made a consequent investment for its main manufacture by replacing an atomization tower. This new equipment consumes less energy which has a strong impact on the reduction of carbon emissions.
- For indirect emissions: Work with our suppliers on less emissive transport solutions
Nexira has worked with its partners to improve transport solutions. Each time it is possible, sea freight is preferred, rather than air transport. Our partners, and particularly our maritime transporters, have improved their carbon footprint. the main action consists of technically improving the boats, with new propellers, new bows, or paints improving hydrodynamics. Finally, the use of biofuels is an area of progress.
The several implemented actions allow a 9% reduction of our carbon footprint per ton of finished product between 2019 and 2022.
This reduction represents about 5,500 tons of CO2, equivalent to 625 world tours by car.
Nexira has chosen to support the Envira Amazonia REDD+ project in Brazil to offset emissions from the inavea™ range, ensuring a certified contribution in offsetting greenhouse gas emissions and supporting local communities. This carefully selected project aims to sequester carbon by preserving 39,300 hectares of forest, previously destined for deforestation and conversion to pasture.
Nexira’s dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility is evident through its actions in reducing carbon emissions and driving social development through the Acacia Program. These initiatives demonstrate Nexira’s firm commitment to making the food and beverage and supplement industries more environmentally friendly and socially inclusive.
